This is a series that I think any history fan, fantasy fan, and adventure fan will love. It’s yet another tail of Robin Hood, with a twist. Stephen R. Lawhead did a lot of research before writing the trilogy and he found one very important thing about Robin Hood that no one else seems to notice, every one puts it in the wrong time frame.
He says if you look at the first written stories of Robin Hood, you would find out that it’s much older than the reign of King Richard. It is also not in the right area of England, for the oldest stories never mention Sherwood Forest. In fact, the Sheriff, the one everybody points to being the first bad guy Robin Hood faces, actually helped Robin in the beginning.
Now, Lawhead has left most of the series the way you remember it, The sheriff is still the bad guy, Marshal Guy is still an Idiot, but it is now set in Wales, when Normandy and French King Edward the 1st invades and concurs England, and Wales, and yes, they were many different small kingdoms in England in that time frame.
The First book named Hood is how Prince Bran ap Brychan losses his Father, throne, and the trust of his people to the Norman Invaders and with the help of an old woman, becomes Rhi Bran ye Hud (Walsh for King Raven the Enchanter and if you try to say it with a bad English accent, you’ll sound I like Robin Hood).
The second book, Scarlet, is Will Scarlet’s confession of how he came to follow Bran and ended up in the Sheriff’s dungeon to be executed. How he fell in love with a woman named N’oin.
The third book which comes out sometime 2009, is titled Tuck and I can’t wait to read it.
So take a new look at an old story. Lawhead did a great job presenting the story. I loved them and could not put them down.
