Development Update 5/26 (Final)
Bunches of stuff to catch up on.

Avatar / CDN Problem in Philippines
We accumulated everyone's information and forwarded it to the ISPs. Our IT guy mentioned that it might also help to bug your ISP. For some reason, the ISPs in the Philippines are running from a tainted set of DNS information, and as a result, users in that location are unable to find our CDN.

So, one solution that bamboo lady forwarded to me can be found here. Basically, you're changing your domain name server to point to one that is more reliable. (For more general instructions, just go here -- OpenDNS is trustworthy).

The downside of this solution is that you're routing through a domain name server that your ISP doesn't host, so you are potentially taking longer to load sites. There is another possible fix involving the HOSTS file in Windows, but to test it I'm trying to find a user that a) had this problem and b) fixed it by changing DNS servers. So, if you know of one...

Inventory Problems
User ImageWe started looking at this a week or two ago. We know that large inventories are a problem, especially for some of our longest and most passionate users, so we'd really like to try and address it. You may have noticed that we (and by we, I mean fieryange1) recently fixed a couple of things in inventories already: we fixed the ugly show-the-URLs problem in inventory, and compressed the pose box so that it wasn't so large, and made the pose box moveable.

In the next couple of weeks, we'll add pagination. If you have an inventory above a certain size, then you'll be able to page through the items in your collection; it won't be as immediate and fast as if you had a small inventory, but at least you'll be able to see it.

In the next few months we'll roll out an entirely rewritten avatar equip screen. For now the plan is to do it in Flash, but a) allow people to access the old avatar equip if they can't use flash, and b) we'll get community feedback after we roll it out to see if we need to think about offering a new HTML front end, as well.

Problems with Receiving Password Resets
Some users were reporting problems getting their password reset -- they would ask for a new password e-mail, but would never get it. So, we started a sticky to get some information from users to try and track down the issue here.

While some users were receiving e-mail and just weren't looking in the right place, the vast majority of them had been blacklisted. You see, we have to make sure that we don't send e-mail to people that don't exist -- if you send a bunch of e-mail to accounts that don't exist / inactive, then you get penalized by the e-mail providers. So, if we send mail and it bounces, then we put the user on a blacklist.

It turns out that a number of e-mail providers, especially Hotmail and Comcast, were bouncing e-mail occasionally due to server issues. We get the bounce e-mail and then put the user on a blacklist... but that means that the user never receives e-mail from us again, which kind of puts a damper on stuff! (The entire situation is also made more complex by the fact that the e-mail blacklist is stored on a server in the back room that is not connected to the net and guarded by three ferocious two-headed dogs which can neither be evaded nor tricked nor wounded by any mortal weapon. Or something like that, the IT guy was going into elaborate detail, but I had to go get coffee).

For the short term, we're removing people by hand... and for the long term we'll make our blacklist handling more intelligent and/or give people a way to take themselves off.

CAPTCHA Problems
So, the CAPTCHAs have been really effective for us. We're going to be making them probabilistic -- that is, if we think you're a legit user, you get them a lot less frequently -- and we'll be adding them to PMs.

There's been a few isolated reports of problems with the CAPTCHAs. I haven't been able to get much information on this, so if anyone has more information it would be appreciated.

Fanime 2008
So, I spent most of my time at Fanime in the Artist's section, walking up and down (I was trying to find a good artist to commission) and running into random people. I talked to a couple of users, but unfortunately, I missed a bunch of others. I had envisioned working the booth at Fanime, but I did not find out until the last second that we didn't have a booth this year. So, apologies to all the users I was supposed to meet! I was unable to make it to the Gaia panel on Saturday on account of people going off and holding a surprise birthday party for me.

Talking with Gaia users is one of the unalloyed joys of working here, so I'm hoping to tag along with DJ Helsing to a couple of conventions or meetups; more details if I can make that work.

Miscellaneous Bug Fixes
- display character count in the account limit (thank omgwhat for that)
- we'll change the signature limit slightly upward, and won't count URLs -- check back next week for details
- fixed a problem with Prize & Joy
- item norm beta still pending -- more on this next week

Holy Bejeesus THANK YOU for the inventory fixes. They sound both comprehensive and excellent. My regular donation for the coming month just went up considerably.

There wasn't an Ask the Admin this last week, so I've got one quick question. Has there been a drawing for the Christian Siriano contest? I'm trying to win my fiancee a designer wedding dress, and I'm really anxious to find out about it.

Also, there now seems to be a problem with journal comments. If I clicked submit it told me that I successfully canceled. I had to go through the preview and enter about three CAPTCHAs to successfully add my comment.

commentCommented on: Thu May 29, 2008 @ 07:57pm
So far all I can say is OpenDNS FTW!

(Will expand with journal expansion).

5-29 @ 11:16 PM EST:

Gotta love IT jokes. That's a really good one you made.

Probabilistic Captchas = epic win (if they work right).

Sig links up plus urls not counting = glomp! THANK YOU! Awesome, I've always wished urls didn't count as part of your sig. I'll defiantly be checking back in next week (even though I check every day XD).

As for item norm still pending, well I hope you guys get it working and all. It sounds like a really great concept.

Thanks for the updates mate.

Wonderful news, I hated my equip page stretching. I'll be looking forward to the new page, it sounds great.

Thank you SO much for getting on top of the inventory problems! I'll be sure to go post the news in my feedback thread about it, as I know many people are becoming impatient with the way inventories are now working.

I don't even think I'd mind having to page through my items. Anything is better than getting a white screen when I go to equip. So a big THANK YOU AND HUZZAH for that! xd heart I'm not sure about how a Flash version of inventories would work, as a lot of the flash features around here crap out on me when they get heavy user load, but I'm willing to try it out. Hopefully you can make it heavy load-friendly. biggrin

I know a lot of older users will be so happy to hear this. Thanks again for looking into this quickly Pan! biggrin

I also appreciate being able to move the large single-item multi-equip boxes around my inventory. As we all know, having to scroll for anything just sucks. biggrin So thanks for that too. I'll send a thank you fieryangel's way as well. 3nodding

All I have to say in summary is: Woooooooooooooo!!! xd

I love the little dragon. =3
And thanks for the work on the inventory. ^^ I noticed that it was all like condensed and a few other changes. Like when I click biancamella it doesn't go across with all the forms but has like boxes before for poses too. Like...it's smaller now ^^ So I was like "ooh. Odd but thats good ^^"

If you ask me, you guys should put a seperate place to put like your car equip items, something like the house or storage...what it would do is help people who have alot of car items in their inventory, they would actually have a space to put their items in, and it would be alot less confusing for people who are new to gaia and don't know where they are suppost to put their car items once they buy them from the parts store.

Hurrah, the post was made visible! I was worried for awhile, there.

Thanks to everyone for working on the inventory issues.

Does the new Flash equip widget allow us to save outfits? Please? I'm begging you?

This sounds great...I think it's wonderful that y'all are letting us know explicitly what has been done and what's planned. I know it's scary to try and put a timeline on updates, so thanks for trying.

I was wondering if you were aware that new items (such as those from the Daily Chance) are still giving an error message when we try to sell them from the inventory arranger. The message is something along the lines of "102.2009".

Hardy-har. I have finally come out of my lurking journal-ness to actually comment on your journal. >w<

First I'd like to say that I greatly appreciate the updates. I wish more users on the site would come by your journal and read up on all the hard work you guys are putting into the site in the background. It gets so annoying when I come across users that have come to the delusion that you guys are just money-grubbers and don't care about the site. D8

Now to the reason I wrote this comment...Dude~ I LOVE how I can now move the pose box around! 8D I can't tell you how many times I've been tempted to not use an item because the pose box stretched the page and made me have to scroll over to click on whatever pose I wanted. X_x It gets pretty tedious when you're trying out the many different poses for an MC or new event item or something. Many thanks to you and fieryange1 for that fix. <333

Can hardly wait for the updates to the avatar equip page. I don't visit it as often as I used to, but I visit it enough that it would be nice to see some changes to it. xD

And love your...interesting drawings. xD

[Mexico hundreds..]

You guys really need to fix Cards. Its messing up again.
Instead of doing something new and neglecting the old things, try and make sure that the old things are working properly.

Thanks

Hi, I posted other day here asking for some advice at a friend's problem. She can't use a desktop, so she uses Gaia from her PSP, but about a week or two, she can't send private messages, nor post at her journal or any other journal. She asked me to report that somewere, because maybe some developer or adm could help on that. Where should I report it? Gaia doesn't like her (or her PSP) anymore?

Thanks again (eleventybillion times, to be exact) for all you and your work (collab or not). Thanks also for publicly announcing this journal again. I thought that the notoriety of not posting ETAs had pushed you into hiding. xD

Also, I like that you are staying pretty expressive; after a while some devs and artists decided to just post blurbs stating that they are alive.

There's a lot of other stuff on this journal post, but this is the one thing that matters most to me... as evidenced here:

Are towns items trash really an issue, though? From what I've seen, and from my own experience, the problem lies with multi pose items... If trash is an issue, well, I'm completely ******** sweatdrop

Happy to hear that inventories are getting more focus- I've read through a few different threads by users, and can understand their frustration. I've found that I don't make new outfits as often as I used to, due to effort to clean out my inventory / spread it across accounts / make sure it keeps loading. But it requires more thought in advance.

The moveable / condensed pose box is definitely appreciated 3nodding heart

And probabilistic CAPTCHAs sound sweet.

commentCommented on: Fri May 30, 2008 @ 04:35pm
So many great changes, I love it!

The way that the EIs poses (Biancamella, Hermes especially) were fixed is definitely a good start, and I hope stuff like that continues. I'm curious to see the Equip screen update, but at the same time I hope there's a non-Flash option.

Two things still up with Inventory, though:
- I'm still getting an Error when I try to use the sell-back option in the Arranger. [Error 102.2009]
- When you click a multi-pose item it's little window pops up, you equip the pose you want and the little pop-up doesn't automatically go away anymore. This is more of an inconvenience than an actual glitch, though.

I love the CAPTCHAs still. People whine about them being inconvenient, but it's a necessity with all the botting and spamming going on. The only problem I've ever had is that some of the words are hard to read, but that's easily fixed by me resetting the words.

I'm excited for Signatures being upped a little... just as long as they aren't allowed to become obnoxiously long.

I love your journals, they're so insightful.

I hope you guys manage a fix for the large inventories. With all the multi-pose items popping out, even in gold shops, it'll probably be happening more and more. I don't have the problem yet, thankfully... but I would die if I couldn't customize my avatar. D:

Nice to hear that problem in the Philippines is getting resolved, that's been ongoing for awhile now.I like the idea have the pagination feature to the inventory, hopefully it won't hamper seeing what you or making it run slow like it does now.I'm also hoping item norm fixes the problems with the customizer and having a certain limit of items,we keep getting new stuff and I still don't have room for anything without it making a blank screen D; .Oh and expanded signature character limit ftw!

I don't know if this is the right place but I've noticed that when typing in some captchas if I type it in incorrectly it still allows it... and I thought that defeats the point XD

Just letting you know

Yay! I can use my (entire) inventory soon! ^^;

I have to agree with LyKashii; the same thing happens for me - the Captcha allows almost any variation I enter (eg., Robinson/Robertson).

I find it slightly useful, yet still a bit worrying that you can mispell the captchas or change a couple of letters and it still goes though.

This is odd: In this very journal entry, see the little piece of paper on the left, where it has the date of the entry and Panagrammic's brown name? It should link to that entry, but instead it links to entry number 10 made years ago in kaia9's journal.

Very strange. neutral

Hey Pan, hope you read this, sorry for posting this here, it's just I'm unsure of which developer it would go to. Bebo isn't granting items anymore. I'm not sure if that's intentional, but I don't think it is, because the gold meter bar goes over the top if you accumulate more than 1000 gold, and the graphics start getting wonky.

Are you going to fix the Error 102.2009 or whatever it is that makes us unable to sell stuff back to the shops from our inventory?

I really miss it. Saves a lot of time liquidating DC stuff versus having to go to the shops and reload the page every single time... xp

Anyway, I'm thankful for the fixes that have come and await the chance to try out the new Flash version. I have to keep most of my stuff in storage or on mules and it'd be great to get some of that stuff back out and usable.

But thanks as always for you and your whole team being awesome.

Thank you for increasing the signature limits. I have a question on that though. When you guys count the physical size for the signatures is that a combination of both the image size and the text size? Other forum sites I've been a member of considers physical height for a signature to be a combination of both image and text. I've seen some concerns that with the increase in size people are going to go overboard on the images and text now in their signature space and want to be certain that text is included in the 500x500 pixel size limits.

Hey I'm not sure if you recived my PM answering yours... so, I came back here to post it:

Hey! Thanks for answering my question! lol

Ok, I`ll provide all the info I have about it:

She used Gaia from her PSP for 3 months exclusively... and sudenly it stoped sending Private Messages since May 18 she couldn`t send anymore. It doesn`t load nor anything. .... pan

She also used to post in her journal, but for some unknown reason she can't do that neither. She can't comment at people's journals anymore neither (but she can read people`s journals). ... pan

She asked me for some assistance on that, but I'm clueless, could some of you give us a help on that?

Thanks a lot Panagrammic!

If you need more info, just ask, and I`ll ask her.

Edit on June 8th: It is fixed somehow now! Thanks for the concern!
