Bandit: The Tale of a Young Girl (Prologue)
"Get out. OUT!"
"B-but..."
"It's your fault your mother died, I knew it! You're a demon child!"
"I...no it's not!"
"Don't come back! Go find somewhere else to live!"
"Father, wa-"
The door slammed shut. The young girl turned the knob, but it was locked. She knocked many times and when that didn't work, she threw herself at it many times with hopes it would fall in, or at least budge. No success. Her tiny body numb, the girl fell to the ground as tears began to well up in her eyes. She sat and cried, her body bruised and aching. It almost hurt as much as she did inside.
After a good half hour, the girl stood. Not knowing what else to do she began to wander the streets alone. Snow started to fall and she shivered, her breath visible in the cold winter air. It was late and nearly Christmas Eve...surely no one would want a child, or another one.
Suddenly, the gilr stopped upon hearing something. Crying? She followed the sound cautiosly until she was sure she'd found the source, but...it didn't make any sense! She stopped right in front of a dumpster where the crying was loudest. With great courage, the girl pulled the right top door of the dumpster open and gasped at what she saw.
On top of the components of the dumpster and wrapped in a light pink blanket was a baby. It was very small - a newborn. The girl's eyes widened. Who would do such an awful thing? With caution as to not startle or hurt the baby, she picked it up, holding its blanket and body close to hers to keep it warm. Still, the baby continued to cry.
"Sshh...it's alright," the girl whispered. "I'm here now." She slowly and softly whispered the same thing over and over again, gently running a finger across the baby's soft skin. Within a few moments, its crying ceased.
