DAVID DOSS: Race, Gender & Politics
In the office today, we’re all talking about these numbers:

1) One in five Americans in 2050 will be an immigrant. Today it’s one in eight.
2) Latinos are already the largest minority group in the U.S., but in 2050 nearly one in three people here will be Latino.
3) By 2050 whites will be 47% of the population.

All of these projections come from a fascinating new study on immigration growth from the Pew Research Center. LINK TO PEW STUDY

You can’t help but think about all of this in the dynamic context of today’s race for the White House. Coincidentally, we are writing, shooting and producing a special for air Friday: “Uncovering America: Race, Gender and Politics.”

This is not new territory for us. We aired a similar special after the South Carolina primary. It triggered an explosive response. Instantly, we received hundreds of thousands of e-mails. The ‘incoming’ finally stopped at just over 500,000.

Lots of you had lots to say about how race and gender of a candidate might - or might not - affect how you vote. And many of you resented being lumped into an ethnic voting block: The Black vote. The Female vote. The Latino vote.

Talking about the guys in New Hampshire wearing “Hillary, iron my shirt” t-shirts we noticed no one is wearing an “Obama, shine my shoes” t-shirt. So in the context of that discussion one of our producers here observed: “It’s more okay to be sexist than it is to be racist.”

It’s all highly charged and a lot to talk about, which is why we hope you’ll join our experts on the blog. Over the next few days you’ll be hearing here from some of the experts in our special: Leslie Sanchez, a Republican strategist and author of “Los Republicanos, Why Hispanics and Republicans Need Each Other.” We’ll also hear from Faye Wattleton, co-founder and and president of the Center for the Advancement of Women. And Jane Junn, associate professor of Political Science at Rutgers University.
