X Story Part Two: It Comes in Waves
Please read part one below before reading any further

That night, Eddie layed in the bed of the small guest bedroom he had been sleeping in for the past year and a half, alone with his thoughts. There wasn't mutch to remember beyond this time and he began to wonder if maybe he didn't want to remember. Maybe the amnesiac state was his own doing and not the injuries and remaining burns. The only things that brought him back to the harsh relaity he left behind were the nightmares. The confusing, horrible nightmares that he just knew involved the last thing he saw before his memories died.

He found himself inside them again, startled awake by the green flash that always came at the end of the dream. Eddie cupped his head in his hands, trying to calm himself down. Moonlight danced around the room, illuminating the burn scars all over his body. All he could hear was the sound of the waves outside the small beach house he had been calling home. It was still night. Emilia and Paulie were asleep in another room and Eddie wasn't interested in returning to the nightmare.

He put on a pair of boardshorts hanging over a chair in the room, and shuffled along the hardwood floor making his way outside and down the three front steps into the soft sand below. It felt nice and cool between his toes. Eddie stood for a moment in the cool night air, breathing in the smell of the ocean on the breeze. Already, the nightmare was fading from his thoughts and he grabbed a longboard jammed in the sand beside the house to go meet the waves.

Paulie had taught his student well in the past year and a half and now Eddie was out in the middle of the night, alone, paddling himself out. The full moon hung low in the sky and wind blew from a strange distant storm on the horizon. He felt himself rising high on his way out, over the sloping water. Sitting up on the board, he began to think that maybe this was a dangerous and stupid idea, but he was already out and he may as well just go for it.

He turned himself around and waited for the right one to roll his way. Two decent waves rolled beneath him and he let them go. Amongst the sound of the ocean could hear the call of one of Gaia's large sea creatures as if it were signaling him to go. The next wave was much larger than the last two. He could feel it coming and positioned himself to take the wave.

His board shook as if trying to throw its rider. Eddie had never been on such a large wave and he tried to put out of his mind the danger as he got to his feet. He was up and it was glorious. The sound of the wave roared over his head and he rode fast down the coastline before the powerful wave finally ripped the board out from under his feet and sent him flyig high into the air. His six seconds of glory were over.

He landed, face down, in a muddy crater. The board stabbed itself into the ground near his head as if the wave was playing a giant game of mumbleypeg with the cliffside. The board didn't sink deep enough to stick and a second later it fell over right onto Eddie's back. THWACK!

"Ngkh!," was all Eddie could manage with his face in the mud.

Sea water trickled its way in from the edge of the crater. It had been there a while and was slowly disolving away. A crab scurried over Eddie's head before he could push himself up. It quickly darted away to hide from the human in hadn't noticed moments ago. The board slid down off his back landing with a thump. He sat up, spitting out the mud and sand he had attempted to eat at the end of his wipeout. He then proceded to blow out whatever had gone up his nostrils and smelled a faint, familiar scent. The nightmare flashed through his head along with the words, "It's time to end this once and for all!!!"

"I've been here, before," he muttered to himself while getting to his feet. A few steps backwards and he stumbled over his board, landing square ont his back. Eddie layed there, in pain, not bothering to attempt getting to his feet again. His present situation came to mind. He wasn't quite sure how far he had gotten from Paulie and Emilia's house and wasn't planning on surfing back now.

So Eddie layed in the crater, listening to the muffled sounds of the waves outside. One wave crashed hard against the crater wall, splashing high into the air and splattering large drops of sea water onto Eddie's face. Anger began to well up but was quickly subdued by the sound of someone sliding down into the crater. "Here you are." It was Paulie's voice. "I saw you get up and watched you out on that wave. You okay, Ed?"

"I think I've been here before," Eddie answered, "Do I hear a helicopter?"

Paulie looked up into the night sky, "No, Ed. It's just you, me, and the ocean."

"Oh." He paused, "Then can you help me out. I tripped over my board when I tried a minute ago and I'd rather not do that again."

"No problem." Paulie reached down, grabbing Eddie by the arm, and helped him to his feet. "You know... you were pretty impressive out there."

"I've got a good teacher." He put his arm over the older man's shoulder who helped him hobble his way out of the crater. Eddie stood and waited atop the cliff while Paulie went back down for the board. A few odd flashes of memories darted through his head and he took a few steps over, away from the cliff. "Here. I was here," he muttered.

"What's that?" Said Paulie. He had come up with the board and caught the tail end of Eddie's mutterings.

"I don't know. I think maybe I'm remembering something." He reached out to take the board from his teacher.

"I got it, Eddie. My board's back at the house. Hey, I've got something I want to show you. It might help if you're ready to remember what happened to you."
