Chapter Four: The Sorting
The sea of first year students soon had clambered into the boats and launched into the lake crossing the familiar tack till they tied them up again and got to the front gates of the school. Hagrid reached up and knocked three big knocks of the great doors before they were opened by a short little man in sparkling blue robes, “Welcome to Hogwarts” he squeaked out, “Follow me!” The first years followed the tiny little man into a side room passing the doors to what sounded like a great hall where everyone was. The little man magicked up a stool which he stood up on and raised his voice so that everyone could hear him, “My name is Professor Flitwick and I am Deputy Headmaster, Professor of the Charms Class, and Head of Ravenclaw House!” He seemed almost too excited to take it and a few of the first years stepped away from him, “Now soon you will be sorted into your houses and I will be back to get you when that time comes! See you soon!” With that he hopped up and ran off into the great hall allowing the first years to mingle. Albus leaned over to Scorpius, “Did he seem a little…” “Too excited to be able to coexist with other people?” Scorpius asked back. “Exactly.” Albus smiled and Scorpius nodded. They both snickered a few moments later when they heard a few of the other first years suggesting they had to battle a troll. Scorpius leaned over to the one who had suggested it, “If they did have us all battle a troll to get in, some of us who are muggle born or raised by muggles and have not even raised a wand in their life, do you think there would be over a thousand children at Hogwarts?” The kid shook his head after thinking for a second or two and Scorpius smiled, “I thought not.” The door opened at that moment and up popped Professor Flitwick, “We’re ready for you now! Follow me again please!” And they did. Right into the great hall they marched Oo-ing and ah-ing at the star filled ceiling and golden plates and goblets and other amazing things in the room. Flitwick had carried his stool in with him and placed it on the platform in between the head table and all the House tables. On top of the stool there now sat a hat though not as patched and frayed as one would have thought. Then, while everyone sat watching, the hat opened a rip in it wide and started to sing:
“I Am the Hogwarts Sorting Hat, And though I am not old, I have a story that I tell, To tell you what I’ve been told! See a few years back my brother burned, By dark wizards of the age, So a wizard whipped me off his head, And made me the new page! He told me of a dangerous wand, Of people he loved, killed, He told me his life’s story and, Of what he had to build. He said my brother had been burned, And that it was my job now, To tell you to what House you belong, By picking out traits you endow. He said that Gryffindor he knew them all, And that they were quite brave, That they weren’t afraid to risk it all, To save who needed Saved. He said that Hufflepuff though often forgot, Were the most loyal of them all, That they had traits unlike the rest, Which helped them up when they would fall. He said that Ravenclaw the always smart, Were confusing to the rest, But though it seemed made things up, They often were the best. And last he said that Slytherin, Cunning till the very end, Were not as dark as they had seemed, And could be one’s best friend. So as he cast his spell on me, To make me talk and sing, He said that he would love it most, If Hogwarts was the prized ring!” The whole hall burst into applause as the hat finished and bowed to each of the tables before going silent. Albus found himself getting nervous and clammy as Flitwick once again spoke up, “Now when I call your names, you will sit down on the stool and I will place the sorting hat on your head. When the hat calls out what house you belong to you will go to that table and sit down.” The first years nodded and Flitwick picked up the hat as he got on a new stool beside the first and unrolled a long list, “Abbot, Ginger!” A girl with a plait in her long blonde hair walked up and sat down. When the hat hit her head it covered her eyes with how big it was and a few moments later it yelled, “HUFFLEPUFF!” The middle left house exploded into cheers at getting the first, first year. She hopped up, gave the hat back to Flitwick and ran off to them. Albus smiled at her as she ran past. Minutes later they had just reached the end of the L’s. “Longbottom, Jason!” Flitwick called as a chubby boy with brown hair and bright blue eyes sat down on the stool. The hat pondered for a few seconds this time, longer than the last, before, “GRYFFINDOR!” The middle right table burst into applause as the boy ran for it having placed the hat back down and Albus trailed him with his eyes. He saw his brother James clap Jason on the back in congratulations. “Malfoy, Scorpius!” Albus’s attention snapped back around and watched and Scorpius strode up to the stool, put on the hat, and waited. “SLYTHERIN!” The table to the far right burst into cheers as Scorpius joined their ranks. Albus closed his eyes and didn’t open them again until he heard his name, “Potter, Albus!” The hall went completely silent and watched as Albus sat down and he lost track of them in the darkness of the hat. “Hmm…another little Potter hm?” whispered the hat in his head, “Your father created me himself you know. When they realized my brother was too damaged for use. Now let’s see what house to put you in?” Albus thought to his new best friend and wanting to be high in his father’s sights. The hat seemed to smile in his mind’s eye, “So you want to be high in your father’s eyes hm? Ambitious and you seem to be able to get a little talented and crafty.” The hat paused, “Slytherin shall it be?” another pause as the hat pondered, “yes…SLYTHERIN!” Albus heard the hat should that to the entire school and as he slid off the hat he seen his table cheering. He got up and shakily walked to his table passing his brother. James punched Albus lightly in the shoulder and said in a teasing voice, “Told you you’d be a Slytherin!” Albus smiled and sat down next to Scorpius to continue watching the sorting. But only a few moments after the smile had appeared it slid off his face as he seen the kid now walking towards the hat, “Scorpius,” He whispered over, “What was the name? I didn’t hear it.” “Smith, Gale.” Scorpius said back, “Why?” “I just thought I knew him that’s all.” Albus said as worry started to build up in him. That was the kid he’d seen in his vision. The hairstyle and walk were both identical and the kid was named Gale! Albus had to get to James before that kid realized who he was. “SLYTHERIN!” the hat screamed as soon as it had hit the boy’s head and he gave it back to Flitwick politely before striding over to Slytherin table and sitting down with a few of the upper year students. Albus sighed in relief and thought to himself, ‘just a tad more time. Thank Merlin.’ “Weasley, Rose!” Flitwick’s voice squeaked out over the hall as her red curls bounced up and she sat down on the stool so the hat could yell, “RAVENCLAW!” Even as she was taking her seat Flitwick called another, “Weasley, Tegan!” A girl with dark brown hair with reddish highlights in it got up and sat down on the stool, “RAVENCLAW!” And not a second after she was gone, “Weasley, Leon!” and a boy with long silver-blonde hair almost glided up and sat down so that the hat cried, “GRYFFINDOR!” Finally with “Zabini, William” sorted into Slytherin, the woman in the middle of the Head Table stood up. The elderly woman waved her hand for silence, “Welcome to Hogwarts first years! And to our elder years, Welcome Back!” her voice carried the hall in such a way that you knew she was used to this, “I would like to note that the Forest on the edge of the grounds is forbidden to all, that Filch, the caretaker, has asked that no magic be done in the hallways, and that house points will be taken away from people who get into trouble.” She waved her hand again and the feast appeared. Albus smiled but instead of digging in he went over to the Gryffindor table and sat down next to his brother, “We have a problem.”
