Night Of The Lost Souls
A story I wrote:

You are walking home and suddenly you are overcome by a horrible clenching sensation in your stomach. You double over, moaning and crying. You then fall to your knees as the pain begins. You fall the rest of the way to the pavement and black out.
When you wake up you are in a small room. It’s dirty and cold. It looks like a hospital but not near sanitary enough for the ill. You start to shiver and try to stand up but you are chained to your cot. You look down and see you are wearing a white, threadbare shirt and a pair of white shorts. You look at your feet and see the number 44 burned into your ankle. How did you get here? Who brought you here? Why are you chained up? And what does the number on your ankle mean?? You start wondering as your mind makes up little stories to explain this.
So, you’re walking home, your stomach hurts and you pass out. When you wake up your in a weird room with no explanation. What the heck is going on?! Well, in the midst of your thoughts a tall woman with long, shiny red and black streaked hair walks in. She’s in a nurse’s uniform and she has a syringe. The trunk of the needle is a dark green liquid. She walks over and unchains you. Rubbing your sore wrists you ask her what’s going on.
“You have been chosen for an experiment,” she says. Well she sounds nice.
“An experiment?” you ask.
“Yes, you are test subject number 44,” she says pointing at your ankle.
“But, I never agreed to this,” you say your voice cracking, sounding for all it’s worth like dead fallen leaves.
“It doesn’t matter,” she says her red eyes glowing, “You were chosen. It’s too late.” Suddenly she doesn’t sound so nice any more.
You jump out of the cot you’re in and push her, hard, to the side. You run down the hall. It seems as if there are millions of rooms. In some of the rooms there are people chained up like you were. But in most small creatures in dark purple jumpsuits are covering things up. The suits have hoods and you can’t see their faces. What is it they’re covering up? You gasp, mortified, as a pale white hand drops from one of the sheets. They’re CORPSES! Immediately the creature turns around. It drops the body and starts towards you with slow, limping steps. You turn around and see the nurse coming after you. Screaming you start to run. As pass each room the creatures come out and follow you. Looking back you run into a large object. You turn around and notice it’s a giant of a man and he’s holding you in a full body lock. You find it hard to breathe as he crushes you in his ape-like arms. You scream and suddenly a tall shadow appears behind you. He hits the ape-man square in the neck and he drops heavily to the floor. Your savior is a tall boy with black hair. He grabs your wrist and pulls you along. Pulling you around a corner he stops to look at you.
“The nurse is coming,” he breathes, “We have to go as fast as possible.”
Looking around the corner you see she is dangerously close and start to run, the boy slightly ahead of you. You run for about 10 minutes and slam into a room. He closes the door behind you.
“Who are you anyway?” you ask after a long, awkward silence.
“You don’t remember?”
“No, I don’t, or I wouldn’t have asked!”
“As direct as ever, I’m Talon. I was your childhood… sweetheart. I have changed a lot since then, I guess,” He said rubbing his chin.
“Talon?!?!?!” you ask, amazed.
“In the flesh.”
“But you moved!”
“No, I was brought here. I have been experimented on since. My body’s structure is more durable that most, along with my organs and what not. I haven’t died yet like the others,” he says taking off his shirt and showing you an abundance of horrible, jagged scars. You look down and see rings of bruises and burns surrounding his arms and bare legs. You just stare in disbelief.
“I saw them bringing you in and didn’t want you to die,” he says blushing.
“That was sweet. I missed you so much,” you laugh, hugging him tightly.
“Anyway, I know an escape route. After this rest we’ll run to it and get away. You will help me expose these people, right?”
“Of course I will,” you say lying against his chest.
He puts his arms around you and you fall asleep.
You are shaken awake. Talon looks worried.
“She’s close; we have to go, NOW!”
You open the door and run down the hallway. The hooded creatures are taking more corpses away.
“Where do they take the bodies?” you ask Talon, right beside him, he seems to be tiring, the experiments must have done that to your young, restless love.
“They take them… to the experimenting… room… their flesh is eaten by… the creatures… when he’s done with them,” he gasps.
“That’s horrible.”
“I… know.”
You continue running, the nurse right on your tail. She seems like she could go on forever, her eyes are determined and her mouth is pulled into an ugly grin. She continues to gain on you and Talon is quickly running out of strength.
You turn sharply and run head on into a bunch of the creatures, toppling them and falling yourself. The nurse turns the corner and looms above you and Talon. She squirts a little of the green liquid before coming in for the kill. Just in time Talon smacks her hand away, making her stumble backwards.
“Now I really am cross!” she screams, looking fiercer than ever.
Talon grabs your wrist and jumps like a madman over the creatures, pulling you along with him. The nurse screams again and stomps into a room on her left. You start to slow down as you watch.
“Let’s go!” Talon shrieks pulling hard on your wrist, “She’s not done yet!”
You keep running and as you look behind you see that she has an extremely large spear with a tip glinting like diamonds in the pale light.
You quickly round a corner running head on into a door. You regain posture and Talon pushes open the door open with such extreme force it clangs against the wall and pieces crumble away. The nurse is getting closer and closer and it seems like the end of the alley will never come. Suddenly Talon falls and can’t move. You drop to your knees tears falling from your eyes without yield.
You shake him, screaming for him to wake up and run. He doesn’t move and you turn around, the nurse is only four feet away. You stand up with a sudden burst of bravery. The need to protect the one you love.
The nurse takes a violent stab at you and you quickly jump back over Talon. You can see it in her eyes; she’s going to get him. She swipes down and a look of shock crosses her face as you tackle her to the ground. She cuts a deep gash in your leg and you scream with pain and fury. You grab the blade of the spear cutting your hand but you manage to pull it off its stick.

You rip what’s left of the spear from her and whack her across the face with it. She falls to the side touching the welt on her cheek. You bring it down again hitting her in the stomach and she pulls in out of breath. Grunting with the effort you hit her on the side of the skull. You had hit her hard, blood is gushing from the long, deep wound in her head. You can feel the life escape from her.

You finally get a grip on your condition. There is a gash in your leg, hand, on your arms and your forehead. You have a split lip and a seemingly busted nose. Suddenly you feel weak and tired. Your body shuts down and you fall to the ground, unconscious.
*********************

You open your eyes blinking in the bright light. Police sirens sound in the background. Everything sounds distant, far away. Your eyes adjust to the light just as the pain comes. You cringe back as if trying to escape from a monster. You stay like that until the pain numbs your body.

You open your eyes again and see Talon looking at you. He blushes and looks to the side.

“I’m sorry I was watching you sleep, I thought you were having a nightmare…”
“It’s ok,” you say smiling warmly.
“The police are here and taking away all of the creatures and the doctor. The ambulance crew is trying to save the victims.”
“That’s good. I hope most of them come out ok.”
“I’m just glad that YOU’RE ok. What you did for me back there, it was brave. I couldn’t move but I could see. You fought tremendously. I was afraid you would die…”
“Thank you. I…I couldn’t let you get hurt… I just couldn’t let you die…”
He smiled and took your hands. His hands were soft and warm. A tingle, no, a shock, of affection shot through you. You never wanted him to let go.
“I love you. You are the most wonderful, brave, beautiful woman I have ever met and I don’t want you to leave me.”
“I don’t want to leave you, and I don’t want you to leave me either.” You sit up, flinching but ignoring most of the pain. You throw your arms around his neck and kiss him intensely and passionately. You pull back and fall against his chest, sighing happily.

“Well, that was a wonderful end to the night of lost souls,” he says smiling.
