So, I'm home from Italy and of course, something's wrong with me.
While we were in Florence I started to feel kind of sick, it wasn't until 2 days later though that I realized just how sick I was. What I believe I had was a sinus infection which, in me at least, causes light fevers, pressure in my sinus cavities (not to be confused with being congested), and a head that feels like it's stuffed with cotton. I managed to find a pharmacy in Rome by the Spanish Steps where I got a medication to clear up my head. Unfortunately, it didn't work fast enough =/
So, the day that we left and started back home, we took a plane from Rome to Frankfurt. There something funky going on with the cabin pressure which I assumed was the cause of the pain and intense pressure in my sinuses and left ear. It got to be so bad that I could feel the pressure build up on the left side of the back of my neck. Needless to say, I cried when we landed.
When we got to Frankfurt my friend - and witch doctor - gave me a mint and sucker to suck on so that the pressure wouldn't be as bad. Unfortunately, the pressure taking off was so bad I used them both up during take off and had nothing left for the landing. Again, the pressure was so bad I cried.
By the time we got to the Toronto airport I was feeling absolutely awful. I was pale, I was feverish, I was shaking all over, I felt sick to my stomach, and the cherry on top was that my ear still hurt. I must have looked pretty pathetic too because every airline security officer I passed offered me an arm and asked if I was okay. I did my best to convince them I was fine but I felt like I was going to pass out.
When we got to our terminal, I sat down on the floor and rested for a bit. God bless every one of my friends, they went and bought be good food and something to drink and one of them even bought me tylenol. I was also able to get in about a 4 hour nap before we had to start boarding the plane.
But it didn't matter because I still ended up in tears when we landed back home. The pressure was so great I was ready to tear my head off just to make the pain go away. When mom picked me up from the airport, I told her how I felt but since it was about 2am we couldn't do much about it. So after we'd gotten some sleep, later that day she booked me a doctor's appointment.
When I got in to see him, he'd hardly glanced at my ear for a second before he said "Oh god! You poor girl." In my mind I'm thinking s**t.... As it turns out, the sinus infection coupled with the pressure from flying caused my ear drum to completely retract. It was so bad he said it would have been better if it burst, just because then the pressure would have gone. So, now I'm taking two prescription medications, advil cold and sinus and two witch doctor treatments (all of which were prescribed by him). Then, 7-10 days afterward I'm to go for x-rays and all that fun crap.
Long story short...
NEVER FLY WITH A COLD!! You will regret every moment of it.
