Samurai 7
Character Name: Tsukino Nanaka
Physical
Race: Nanaka is all human. However, she is a plethora of nationalities, being half Japanese, one fourth Ainu, and one fourth Turkish. However, she considers herself as “Japanese” as the next person living in the Koga Valley.
Age: Nanaka is 32 years young.
Height: Nanaka is about 5’7” give or take.
Weight: She weighs about 130 pounds.
Skin: Despite being outside wandering around most of the time, Nanaka’s skin is pale and tans selectively.
Eyes: Nanaka’s eyes are a bright blue color, unlike many of the people around the Koga Valley who have darker colored eyes. Despite their color, they are almond shaped and give her a more Asian appearance.
Hair: Nanaka’s hair is light blonde and is straight, coming to the small of her back. She wears it up most of the time because of the heat but to also keep it out of the way when in battle of some sort.
Build: Nanaka has an athletic build, as being a samurai during the Great War gave her the strength and stamina she needed. She is thin and is moderately curvy. Her curves are a soft spot in her self esteem as she wants to be seen as a woman, not a tomboyish girl who’s trying to act like the men…even though it’s true.
Clothes: Nanaka wears light, comfortable clothes, as she travels around a lot since she’s out of work. She wears a green, yukata-like shirt and white hakama-like pants. She has a red and blue scarf that she wears to protect herself from the sand and brown boots help her to walk around through both jungle and desert.
Powers: Nanaka doesn’t have any powers other than the fact that she can drive an airship, but her skills are a little rusty since she didn’t get to drive them much into combat. She can also wield a sword and hold her own in hand to hand combat.
Weapons: Nanaka uses your standard katana, a weapon given to her by her father. She can also use a spear and electronic weapons like cannon and lasers, but she prefers the good, old-school steel.
Mental
Common Sense: To put it nicely, Nanaka doesn’t have very much common sense. She is very rash and can get rowdy in truly dangerous situations. She doesn’t usually think before she acts or speaks and can sometimes find herself in trouble. She does however, try to think of others, but it sometimes doesn’t benefit them. She also rarely knows what she needs, but only usually goes for what she wants.
Intellect: Nanaka is relatively book smart, enough to get around. However, she loves learning about history and other places, as a way to figure out where she came from and where she’s going to go. She sometimes blows her money on books rather than food and unless it’s something she may be interested in, she doesn’t want to hear about it.
Improvisation: Nanaka utilizes improvisation in daily life, whether it is a scuffle on the street, a conversation, or whatever. However, this improvisation is not always good, and can sometimes come across as mean, offensive, or even stupid. She is known for her sense of humor and likes to make people laugh, no matter if it is an intellectual comment/action or not.
Emotional
Likes: Nanaka loves to read. She’ll pick up almost any book, but she prefers books on war history and culture. Being a samurai, she also has an interest in kendo and technology that has to do with combat. Nanaka also has a love for jewelry and makeup as well, despite being a tomboy. If it’s shiny, it’s most likely to attract her.
Dislikes: Nanaka dislikes merchants, but not just any type of merchants; they must be snobby merchants that flaunt their power and use people to get whatever they want. Mostly she just hates magistrates or officials that pick on the lower class. On the other hand, she doesn’t like samurai that point their weapons everywhere to try to scare people into doing their bidding. And as most do, she hates the Nobuseri. Oddly enough as well, Nanaka hates sand. She finds it troublesome and thinks it gets in everything and just causes problems.
Mood: Nanaka is a happy individual. She rarely ever gets under the weather and keeps her head up in the direst situations. She is also very lively and can even perk up other people…or at least, she can try.
Spiritual
Religion: Nanaka follows whatever appeals to her at any given time. However, she does follow the Zen traditions and Shinto aspects that pertain to the samurai.
Strengths: Nanaka’s main strength is her passion for her career, even though she’s out of work. Even if she’s a ronin, some people give her credit for her vigor and love for the samurai way of life. She also can take care of herself, both physically and emotionally and despite what some think, she doesn’t need a babysitter nor does she need a bodyguard.
Weaknesses: Nanaka is weak in the sense that she’s very spur-of-the-moment. She changes her mind in an instant and could be going in a completely different direction with her life, a sign that she is constantly inconsistent. This can be seen by others in such a way that she can’t commit or keep promises, but that’s usually not the case.
Social
Personality: Nanaka is seen by others as a hearty soul, but she can also be immature. She feels that she has to take care of everything, and this sometimes gets her in a mess. She also gets very emotional (mostly angry) when things go wrong. Even though she is childish and rash a large amount of time, she has never been seeing upset to the point of tears.
Family: Nanaka was born to a samurai father and a “merchant” mother (she was a musician). She has two older brothers and an older sister. She also has a twin brother, Shichiroji, and a younger sister. Of all of her siblings, she and Shichiroji were the only two that carried on their father’s samurai name.
Friends: Sadly, many of her friends were killed during the War, but she makes acquaintances during her travels.
Spouse: Nanaka highly believes in love at first sight and hasn’t had that “spark” with anyone yet.
Children: She always wanted children, but it never happened because she never found the right man.
Back Story: Nanaka grew up around the north of Kogakyo in a smaller city inhabited by mostly merchants. Her family was one of the few samurai clans and they lived comfortably among the other townspeople…until she got to be around twelve years old. The people of the town didn’t see it as a concern, but they noticed something about Nanaka and her twin brother: their hair and eye color. Blond hair was uncommon, but it did happen. However, their ice-blue eyes attracted attention, especially since their other siblings had dark hair and eyes. The fact that they were mixed also began to cause some unsettling feelings among the townspeople. But, she and Shichiroji got along and they both learned to go with the flow.
Nanaka and her brother joined the military at roughly the same time, about a year or two before the Great War. She entered the same regiment under Kambei’s command and even though it wasn’t her job, she made it her duty to learn how to fly an attack ship, despite the fact that she would never get to fly one into battle. She suffered some discrimination in the army, not just because of her gender, but because of her race. Being a mix and kind of a jack-of-all-trades made her a form of entertainment for the men. So, she decided to make up for it by training harder and becoming an ideal soldier, ideal enough to survive the war. After the loss of most of the men in her regiment, she, like most of the survivors, left to try to find work that didn’t involve becoming one of the monsters called Nobuseri. She also believed she had to set off to find out if Kambei and Shichiroji were still alive. For the past five years, Nanaka has been a wandering ronin. She has thought of opening a shop of some sort, but every time she thinks of doing so, she remembers that if she did that, it would make her a merchant, and she feels that she can’t let her father down and quit being a samurai. She mostly finds part-time jobs of being a guard or sort of patrol officer, but many won’t hire her because she’s a woman and they feel that men would serve the purpose better. That is, until she came upon an inn called the Firefly and finds a certain geisha to help her work something out…
