[/color But now, as deep in thought as he seemed to be, Marina could see some of that terrible memory creep up on him again. She could see all the pain reflected in his dark brown eyes and she began to think of something else to discuss.
“So why were you late?” she asked. He rose out of the midst of his thoughts and shrugged.
“I dunno really why. I was sorta trying to get a little dressed up for this,” he smiled and held her hand in his. Marina noted how soft it felt despite how hard and tough he seemed sometimes. She took a few steps closer to him and rested her head on his chest.
“It’s okay,” she whispered and looked up into his eyes.
“So what’re we gonna do now?” he asked. “I don’t really have anything in mind.”
“Neither do I,” she said. They stood there in the middle of the small dining room, completely silent. As she stood there she noticed he smelled particularly sweet and that his shirt was neatly ironed and pressed, unlike its usual crumpliness. “Wow,” she whispered, “you were trying to make a good first impression, weren’t you.”
“So what’s wrong with a little dressing up?” he sounded somewhat offended.
She started to laugh. “I was just messin’ with you,” she smiled and reached up to ruffle his black hair. He started to laugh, too, and embraced her.
