For some odd reason, Tad's Steaks doesn't seem so popular. Maybe there's something about the San Francisco location that the locations in NYC can't match, but that's enough digression.
It's basically a cafeteria-style setup where you order what you want and just slide down the line with your tray and your order. What I like is that they cook up your order right in front of you and we all know the reason for that. The real reason this place is so appealing to me is because of its cheap cost in comparison to other steak joints elsewhere in the city. You're going to be paying around $10 - 20 for a full meal, but all their meals come with your choice of baked potato, mashed potato, or rice in addition to some nice, crispy, and buttery garlic bread and a garden salad with choice of dressing (I usually go for the oil and vinegar dressing--it's light enough to contrast with the rest of the meal, at least for me). Sure the steaks there aren't top-notch but for such a cheap price, it's as good as it gets.
My personal recommendations: If you come in from 11AM to 4PM during the workweek, go for the Lunch Special. For only $7.95, you can have a complete rotisserie chicken or cowboy (bone-in rib-eye) steak meal, complete with baked potato, garlic bread, and garden salad. If you miss the lunch special, the filet mignon there isn't bad and neither is anything else on the menu.
Verdict? Don't pay attention to the rumors nor take my word for it--the only way you'll be able to judge the fare of Tad's Steaks accurately is to try it out for yourself. I did and at least in my view, I'd return to this place over and over. 3nodding
