Chapter One: Angel and Death
I’ve been feeling depressed lately. Listening to my ipod doesn’t help me anymore. Going outside and taking walks won’t cut it. Talking with my friends on the phone or in person doesn’t help either. I don’t know how this happened. I don’t know why I’m unhappy. I don’t know what is wrong with me. Sometimes I’ll wander aimlessly in my house or just lie down in my bed staring at the ceiling. Is it that I’m really bored? Is it that I’ve lost the meaning of life? “Yume! Get out of your room and do something for a change?” I heard my mother call from downstairs. “What do you want me to do?” I shouted back. “Well, for once why don’t you eat! Skipping your meals aren’t always good choices!” Mother suggested. “I’m not hungry!” I responded. “Just do something besides wasting away in your room, Yume!” Mother snapped. I jumped out of my bed and opened my door. “Fine, I’ll take a walk.” I grumbled, as I went downstairs. Father glanced at me with a worried expression as I passed by him in the living room. “Look at you. You’re so skinny and pale. Before you leave, maybe you should eat.” he insisted. “No, thanks. I’m not hungry at all.” I said. “That’s not right. You haven’t eaten a single solitary thing for a week!” Father pointed out, as I grabbed my sweater. “I’ll eat sometime, maybe.” I told him and I went out of my house. I didn’t know where to go. So I thought maybe I could just sit down on a bench at the park and stare at the pond. It used to calm me down when I was angry, but lately, nothing makes me angry anymore. I stared down at the ground as I walked. Soon, I was at the park. I sat down at a bench. Then I noticed whispering behind me. I spun around to see two kids arguing with each other. One was a blonde girl with blue eyes and the other was a black haired boy with brownish eyes, but it looked a lot like red. “You leave her alone! There’s no way you can help her.” the girl was saying to the boy. “The last thing she needs is a whole bunch of cheesy words coming from some goody-two-shoes.” argued the boy. “Well, at least I can try to make her feel better instead of making her feel worse like what you would do!” she shot back. “Hey-” “Can you two carry your quarrel somewhere else? You’re making me dizzy.” I growled. “Oh no! She can see us!” the girl squealed. “She can hear us too!” the boy added. “Of course I can. You two are only just behind me.” I snapped, feeling irritated with the two. There was a big POOF and the girl and boy were the size of my hand now. The girl had a halo over her head and she had mini wings on her back. She looked like a mini angel. The boy had horns on his head and he had mini dragon wings(or probably bat wings) on his back. “What the-” I started. “Hello, my name is Angel. I felt your unhappy waves and decided to assist you to feel better.” the girl greeted. “So what’s he doing here?” I asked, pointing at the boy. “Hey! The name’s Death and I felt your wave too. I’m here because you seem like the type that might need my protection!” Death said. “What?” I asked. “It’s hard to explain.” he grumbled. “Can’t you two find someone else to hang with?” I asked. “No, you’re one of the few people who lost the meaning to live. I’m here to make you feel all better.” Angel said, sitting on my right shoulder. “I’m here to stop Angel from turning you to a complete goody-two-shoes.” Death said, landing on my left shoulder. “This is stupid.” I moaned. “Stay positive, Yume. We’ll have lots of fun together.” Angel said, with a smile. “Yeah, lots of fun.” agreed Death. “Hey, Yume! What a surprise to see you here.” someone said behind me. I turned to see Hero, a classmate of mine in school. “Hero!” I cried out, as I stood up, quickly. “Did I scare you?” he laughed. “N-no! I wasn’t expecting to see anyone here and I was surprised to see you.” I told him. “Ah… True love…” sighed Angel. “Shut up.” muttered Death. “So, are you doing anything right now?” Hero asked me. “Nope, I was just taking a walk because my mom wanted me to do something besides hanging in my room.” I told him. “Oh? I guess she’s noticed too.” Hero remarked. “Noticed what?” I asked. “All of your friends are talking about how depressed you’ve been acting. Even I’ve noticed the rain cloud hanging over your head. I hope everything’s okay…” Hero said, with a worried expression. “Thanks for your concern, but I’m fine.” I lied. “Honesty is the best policy. This guy looks like a good person to confide your worries to.” Angel whispered in my ear. I ignored her. “Well… if there’s anything you want to tell me about, I’ll be more than willing to listen.” Hero said. “Here’s your chance!” Angel insisted. “Don’t do it! He might decide to blab it to the whole world!” Death whispered in my other my ear. “Thanks Hero.” I said, trying to ignore Angel’s and Death’s voices ringing in my head. “Don’t thank me. Any friend would do the same.” Hero told me. “Oh, what a surprise seeing you here, Hero.” a voice behind Hero said with a fake sweet voice. I knew who it was. She was the second most popular girl in school. Mandy beats her in the most popular and most beautiful girl in school. Still, second place isn’t that bad. “Oh, hi Vicky. You’re here too?” Hero greeted, as she glared at me and batted her eyelashes at Hero. “I love taking walks to the park. Why don’t we go see the view of the pond over at the other side? I hear it’s much prettier.” she told him. “Don’t let her take Hero away from you! Not very many people can get a chance with true love and a hot guy!” Angel told me. “Besides that girl is bad news all over.” “Who cares about love? Just make the girl jealous. Take her guy away from her just so you can laugh at her jealous face.” Death told me. “Vicky’s right, Hero. It’s better there. Why don’ you go with her? I needed to head home anyways.” I said, getting dizzy with Angel’s and Death’s different opinions. “Okay, I’ll see you tomorrow in school, Yume.” Hero said, as Vicky pulled him away. “Why are you always listening to Death? You didn’t confide in Hero. You shot down your chance for true love! What are you doing!?” Angel cried out. “Listen. I don’t want anyone getting mixed up in my problems. If I rely on others too heavily, no good will come out of it. Sometimes I gotta stand on my own. Plus, I’m not interested in going out with Hero because of the jealous girls I have to face back at school.” I told her. “Those are good reasons. Why do they have to be good reasons?” complained Death. “Because I’m a good person.” I snapped. “You’re not perfect though.” Angel replied. “Nobody is perfect Angel.” I told her. “Come on! Good is boring!” Death moaned. Angel flew on to Death’s side. “If you’re so bored, then go back to where you came from and leave Yume alone!” she scolded. “Hearing you say that makes me want to stay more!” teased Death. Soon I was back home. I went into my house and went back into my room. “Don’t go back in your room again!” Mother moaned. “I have to! I need to do my homework!” I shouted. “I thought you did it all yesterday!” Mother yelled back. “I didn’t do all of it!” I confessed, as I unzipped my backpack and pulled out my stuff. “Why don’t you skip homework?” Death suggested. I didn’t say anything as I started my homework. “Shhh! Maybe we should leave her alone Death.” Angel suggested. “Why?” Death asked. “She’s depressed again and I don’t think our voices can get to her.” Angel answered. “Oh… okay fine.” Death agreed. The two of them flew over to my vanity table. Angel started playing around with her reflection on the mirror, while Death teased her by flicking chunks of lotion at her. “Don’t make me attack you with the lipstick, Death!” Angel threatened. “It’s not like you can lift it with your weak arms.” Death taunted. “Watch me!” Angel said. I looked up from my homework to watch Angel lift the lipstick cap off and lift the lipstick. “Prepare to turn red!” Angel warned. “H-hey, Angel! Put that down! N-no! No! Get that thing away from me!” Death complained. I watched the two fly around chasing each other. Such an animated pair… “This is getting a little heavy…” Angel complained. All of a sudden her wings stopped flapping and she started to fall. She had lost grip of the lipstick. “Ahhh!” Angel cried out. There was a flash of black. The lipstick crashed to the ground making a big red mark on my wooden floor, but Angel was safe. Death held Angel in his arms. “See, told ya you couldn’t take it.” he sneered as he set her down on my vanity table. I had already finished my homework. I got up. “You two are impossible! Look at my floor!” I cried out. “I’ll clean it up!” Angel offered trying to flap her wings, but she couldn’t achieve lift off. “you over exercised your wings. You’ll have to rest now.” Death told her as he flew down and picked up the lipstick. “Trash it.” I told him, as I went downstairs to get a wet rag.
