Chapter O N E
I could barely see anything through the smoke and flames. The fire crackled and flickered wildly. All I could hear was screaming. I tried to reach my hand out to her aid, but it was no use. I could hear her voice get quieter as if somebody was covering her mouth. My heart pounded faster and faster, and I reached out farther. I felt a few fingers touch my hand briefly, but then they were gone. Now, I could hear her sobbing, and calling my name. I could tell she was scared. Unfortunately, I was, too. I was going numb since my blood pressure was so immense.
I am undeniably in absolute love with her, yet she doesn’t know about my feelings. That day was burned into my memory; it was inerasable. That was already three years ago, though it seems like it was only yesterday. I had made up my mind; I am going to search for her and rescue her.
My feet thudded against the steps as I ran down the stairs to eat a brief breakfast. Even though it was summer, I wanted to finish my chores early. I could hear my sisters fighting over who got to get the chance to brush their hair first and put their make-up on. They were both eighteen, one with short, blonde hair which was flared outward, and the other had quite lengthy hair that fell almost down to her elbows. It was always neatly groomed, though, so it worked out nicely on her head. The one with the long brunette hair was named Chelsea, and my other sister’s name was Alexandria, but we always called her Alex. I also had a mom, but my dad already passed away a couple months before I was born.
I could barely hear my own thoughts as they shouted at each other, and I could hear banging upstairs in the bathroom. I shut my eyes and resumed eating my cereal. The sunshine shone brightly through the glass window, and the crows were up early for their morning meal. I tried to focus on what I had to do today, such as cleaning the bathroom and vacuuming around the house. I also had to feed my cat, Sanura, which was Swahili for “kitten”.
Next I heard my mother’s voice yelling; penetrating my thoughts completely. I swiftly placed my bowl in the sink, and I walked fast up to my room, but my mom noticed me before I could close my bedroom door.
“Cam! You have to do your chores soon!” She called, and I sighed and nodded. I despised being told what to do twice. My bedroom door was now shut, and I sauntered over to my iPod, and I connected it to my iLuv, which played the music out loud like a stereo, except cooler. I pressed “shuffle”, and I waited for the music to begin. The first tune was “Do This Anymore” by Nickelback.
It seemed as if a tornado had plowed through my room. Guitar music was scattered around, and my clothes were in piles scattered around my floor. My electric guitar was lying on my bed; it had an all-black face on it, but there was a pink heart etched into it with a Sharpie. Nikki had done that, before we got separated; back when we were 13 years old. I frowned, and I simply stared at the heart. I used to invite her over to listen to the songs I had written for her. I would stay up all night trying to find the right pitches and notes, and I would always be so tired the next night. Nikki would sleepover a lot, so she would always throw my blanket, with green stripes decorating it, over me as I slept on the floor, and when I awoke, she was always laying beside me, cuddled up in a dark red blanket she had packed. I would always gaze at her peaceful face, and I just wanted to hold her, though I couldn’t, since I didn’t want to wake her up from her utopia.
Suddenly, the song switched, and I realized that the previous one was over. The new song was “I’ll Be” by Edwin McCain. My eyes grew wide, and I fell down on my knees against the cold, wooden floor. Sadness was consuming me as I listened to every beat of the melody. This was Nikki’s favorite song. She would always play it on my iLuv whenever she was over; it was the first one that she always picked.
I quickly opened my closet, and pulled out my somewhat old, camouflage backpack that I used to pack my belongings when I traveled on vacation with my family. I didn’t pack much, because I wanted it to be as lightweight as possible.
I snatched my green-striped blanket, and I carefully folded it up and placed it inside. I also packed a couple of Nutri-Grain bars, just in case I got hungry along the way, but I had also added in $100 from my savings account, since I had no idea what I would need to do, and I would need to stay somewhere and get food, and maybe even find a job.
I also packed a book called “Tsubasa”; one of the many mangas I was reading currently. I was only on volume 5, though. I packed a few pairs of clothes, and shoved a breath mint or two into my pockets, since I wouldn’t be brushing my teeth for quite some time. I stuffed everything that might be necessary for this trip into the pile, and snuck out of the house, quietly enough so that my parents wouldn’t know I was leaving. Eventually they’d find out, but not right away.
End of chapter one! Like it? Please tell me! Uh, I guess the next chapter will be on December 06, 2008, so visit soon~*
