Moonlight Utopia -- Part 3
Moonlight Utopia
After the long school day, I finally got the chance to go home and relax for awhile. The sky had turned to a deep shade of grey, and clouds were rolling in as tiny bits of water began to drop down and hit Earth. I was quite satisfied that it was raining, since the sunlight was a nightmare to me. I couldn’t drive quite yet, though I would be taking my driver’s test this year.

I began to stride at a calm pace. I inhaled the fresh air that surrounded me, and I could feel the rain getting heavier by the minute. Everybody else had ridden the bus home, or even driven themselves home; I seemed to be the only one strolling home. I gazed around at the trees, and to the occasional flickering streetlamp, followed by a quick glance back at my school. It appeared to be still and quiet; quite peaceful on the outside.

My eye caught the sight of a boy who was walking in front of me. Who was this kid? And ... where was he walking to this early in the morning?

He had brunette hair, which was parted to his left side and covering his eye. Plus, from what I could see, deep green eyes to complement it. I found myself uncontrollably staring at this boy, too. At his eye-catching, crimson t-shirt, and his baggy jeans. I finally dragged my view over to a nearby vehicle that carried a passenger in the front seat, as well as a meal from Burger King. Hm. I wonder what they ordered ... ?

Clumsily, I collided into something, causing me to tumble to the ground. Yet again, my cheeks felt like they were burning, and I had a hint of shakiness running throughout my body as I looked up at what I had crashed into.

“I’m really, really sorry!” I said, striving not to make eye contact with the figure. As I looked at my knees, a pale hand came into sight. I turned my head a little to see it better, and I graciously held on to it as he tugged upward to lift me. However, when he had lifted me up, I fell back to the ground, forgetting to regain my balance. It felt like I had been placed in a stove.

Full of embarrassment, I slowly got up, brushing off my knees and my pants, along with my shirt as well. I could hear the boy chuckling a little bit, as though laughing at my tumble.

“Sorry about that.” He said, grinning. Stunned that he had been so friendly to me, I managed to sneak a peek at his bright, pearl-white teeth, noticing that he hadn’t concealed any sharp or pointy fangs beneath his lips. “I’m Joey.” He declared, still smiling.

I couldn’t help but show a smile, too, but quickly stopped as soon as I realized that this boy wasn’t a vampire. Oh, no … What should I do? I might scare him if I show him that I’m a vampire.

“I’m Amelia.” I replied courteously, making an upward curved shape with my lips so that I didn’t reveal my fangs. He seemed to gaze into my eyes for a few moments, but I did the same. It was slightly awkward, just standing there, until I finally broke the contact by looking down at my white sneakers.

“Which school do you go to?” I inquired him, eventually looking back into his sea-green eyes.

“Richardson High.” He obediently replied, staring at me, obviously awaiting my answer. Darn! I can’t tell him where I go to school! What if he finds out I’m a vampire? I thought, attempting to figure out a solution to my dilemma. I glanced around at the street signs and cars passing by. I spotted something I could use.

“Evelein High.” I replied, combining words and making up some. Joey looked puzzled, but continued to smile at me. Now I was sure that I looked confused, too. I wonder why he keeps staring at me?

We stood for a moment, yet again trapped in a moment of silence. After a while, Joey spoke, which I was quite thankful for.

“I’ve never been to Evelein High School. Where is it?” He wondered.

“Oh, it’s not too far; just about half of a mile.” My voice sounded like it hinted my anxiety.

“And you’re walking home?”

“No.” I shot back quickly, realizing that this information just might have revealed my identity. "I'm just out for a walk in the rain.

“Oh. Anyway, do you like your school?” Joey replied, and I blushed. I wondered if he had deciphered my lie.

“Definitely! The teachers seem very nice, and there’s tons of activities. I think I’m going to join the Anime Club and the French Club, mainly because I’m taking French.” I figured I should stop blurting out things before he figures out that I was a “beast”; something I would be classified as if he realized what I was.

“I should get going.” I said, speeding past him before he answered. I heard a faint yell, which seemed to be translated as ‘wait’, but I wasn’t sure, and I began to run instead of briskly walking. I wasn’t going at my fastest speed, however, since I still didn’t want to reveal my secret to Joey. At least, not yet.

Suddenly, I felt a hand forcefully grab onto my shoulder blade. It stung, though the pain vanished after a moment or two.

“Boy, Amelia, you sure can run, huh? Maybe you should consider joining the track team!” He teased, laughing at me while regaining his lost breath. I smiled at him.

“Yeah. That would be fun..." I joked, but our school didn’t have a track team or anything of the ‘running’ sort. Everybody was too quick for that stuff.

I simply stared at Joey as he looked around the neighborhood. I actually hadn’t gotten too far.

“Well, Joey,” I began, starting to walk as I finished my farewell. “I’ll talk to you sometime. Alright?”

“Sure. Would you like my phone number?” He offered, and I giggled while answering with a shy ‘yes’. We both wrote down our numbers on a piece of paper that I dug out of my backpack and torn in half. After we both finished, we exchanged our numbers.

“I’ll see you later, then!” Joey called back, jogging in the other direction. I wonder why he’s going that way? I stared at him for one last second before heading back home.
