*sigh* All right lovies. Time for this one to get a bit rowdy on this. WTF are the school administrators doing!? Okay, better now. But withing my own high school, the art budget has been cut once again to give more money to the already well funded sports department.
Now see, I can totally understand why one would fund the sports department. People love to play, do sports and the like. I understand that. I myself like to roller blade, play lacrosse, soccer, rugby, and I love dancing too. And another point is that living in the Y generation (or igeneration, if you prefer) are stereotypically lazy and over weight. We've gotten addicted to getting everything online, sometimes within an hour. (My own mother ordered a pizza online a while ago.)
But quoting my favorite musician, we're sacrificing beauty for the adrenaline. I love art as much as anything else. I've got two friends who are wonderful artists, and one of them doesn't have the money for supplies and so her art classroom is a good way to get the materials she wants for a short while.
And you know what else is a bugger? There's been no budget cuts of any department to fund the main classes in high school. English, history, mathematics or science. Again, they are looked over for sports. The school has been using the same textbooks for years, with tears and swear words scribbled in them.
There really are failings in the education system. In 9th grade someone asked me if Neanderthals still existed, and a high school senior asked me what the right to bear arms was. Now I know said senior has trouble with history class and she rarely shows up, often she's borrowed notes from me and I've helped her pass tests and such, but by the 12th grade, I would seriously hope a high schooler knew what the right to bear arms is. We regularly have a World War 2 veteran in our class, and another student who epitomizes the dumb blond stereotype asked how old she was. He said he was a veteran of World War 2 and said to go from that to guess his age. The girl pulled out her calculator, asking what year WWII was and saying she was horrible at addition. My history teacher told her the year and stated "Lucky you it's subtraction" The girl was like "o.O; Really? *dumb blond giggle*"
Bah. My rant on budget cuts and the one I was going to do on the failings of the education system meshed. Ah well. I've got more rants and essays to come. heart
