 Chap.1

“Sam RUN!!!!!” screamed Journey Smalls as she ran to get to school.
“I’m going as fast as I can! It’s these stupid shoes!!!” she yelled in reply
“Don’t blame the shoes you’re just slow!” she shouted forcing her lanky 5’ 7” frame to go faster.

The second day of school and she was already going to be late!!!! She sighed happily as the school came into view. They ripped across the corner and into the room just as the tardy bell rang. The teacher, Mr. Baurmount, entered and crossed the room with his long, proud stride.

“Now class,” he boomed, “We have to start our monthly book reports.”
Everyone groaned.
“Now, now, this could be fun.”
“Doubt it…” Journey grumbled under her breath.
“So, get started. And remember, class, paper-clip all of your materials together so you don’t lose anything, and if you lose them, or swallow them, or what ever, I do have extras.” He said as the class chuckled.
Moaning Journey pulled out her book and began to look through it. Losing concentration she stared at her paper-clip.
“Sam…SAM!!!” she whispered urgently.
“Dang it, Journey, what!!!”
“IT MOVED!!!”
“What moved!”
“My paper-clip! I was just looking at it and it… well fidgeted!!!! And it’s still doing it!!!”
“What! Paper-clips don’t fidget! You’ve gotta’ have a magnet or something.”
“No! Really I don’t!” she said holding up her hands but still looking at the paper-clip. She looked up at Sam.
“Wait, it stopped!”
Journey looked back down, “It’s still moving!”
“Not when you stop looking at it, turn your head again… yup, it stops.”
“Ladies, get to work!” Mr. Baurmount said sternly as he walked past.
**************

“So,” Journey said taking a chunk out of her bread, “We have “powers” and we didn’t even know it. Weird.”
“This is just TOO weird. Maybe we’re imaging things?” replied Sam looking over hopefully.
“No, I am sure it was real! I just know it!” she said to her friend.
Sam and Journey had been best friends since the third grade. Even though they were so different they could’ve been twins, separated at birth. They looked different, Sam’s blonde curly hair to Journey’s black straight mane. Sam had a small, petite, athletic, body, while Journey was tall, shapely, and strong.
Their looks weren’t all that was different though, Sam was nice to everyone, quiet and soft spoken unless she knew you well. Journey was the type that if she hated you, you knew it and were sure to watch your back because if you made her angry, you’d surely regret it.
“Then maybe we can make this cafeteria food taste better,” Sam said poking at her stale Nacho Surprise, “How do they get it to stay in a square like that??”
“I don’t know about that, but we can do this,” Journey said looking at her high school rival, Miranda Surther. Suddenly her tray jumped up and popped her on her perfect, probably surgically enhanced, face. Screaming she ran from the room. Laughing, they bravely took a bite of their nasty lunch.
********************

Sighing Journey ripped off her thin sheet and walked over to her window. It was still so hot in Billings, Montana. The heat was searing. It kept its deadly grip on the city until it was sucked dry and then, finally, it would start to die down.
Journey wished that the air conditioners life-saving blasts would hit her room. But they didn’t so she was still up struggling to open her window more. Giving up and laying back down she decided to pull off her top layer of P.Js and just go with her tank top and her shorts. If it got any worse, she’d just go nude, but that was a LAST resort.
She lay on her back noticing how the clothes perfectly shaped her body. She had a good figure. A nice flat stomach, long legs, shapely hips and chest, and her face wasn’t too bad either. She liked her body, she decided.
Just then she had an idea. She sat up and pulled the sheet over her, concentrating and putting one hand on the sheet and one on the bed, she covered each side with a thin layer of frost. Rolling over on her side and burring her head into her pillow she smiled. She liked her brain too, and these powers, they were a god-send.

 Chap.2

Journey awoke to a soggy bed. Oh well there’s a downside to everything, she thought, it’ll dry out. She got up and went to the bathroom to take a shower. Coming back to her room, still wrapped in her towel, she got dressed and sat on her bed. I really don’t want to go to school, she thought with a sigh. Then again, who does?
Standing up, she walked over to her back-pack and threw it on. She walked out the door to the house into the crisp morning air. Grumbling a good morning to the neighbor, she set off for the school. She had only walked about 2 blocks when Ravyn Barns ran up beside her. Ravyn was a black haired boy with a loving smile, although he didn’t smile much, and sweet personality. He was so much like her it was scary.
“Hey Ravyn,” she said giving him a smile.
“Hey, Journey, how are you?”
“As good as can be going to school, it feels like were walking to our doom.”
“Yeah,” he said laughing, “We probably are. I always loved your sick sense of humor.”
They walked the rest of the way in silence. There’s not much to talk about walking to your doom right? Once they got to school they waved and went their separate ways. As she was walking through the door Sam came running up to her.
“You know you two really would make a sweet couple.”
“What…? Oh… what do you mean?”
“Well you’re the same height, same hair color, and you are a lot alike. I think you two have the makings for the perfect couple.”
“Oh… what ever…”
“You’re a little spaced out. Uh, more so than normal, are you ok?”
“Oh. Um yeah, I’m ok. I just feel weird since we got these powers. Like something’s missing…”
The bell rang so they stopped talking and got to class.
When the day finally ended journey was itching to stir up some trouble. And her devious mind had just hatched a plot to “royally” tick off Miranda.
“Oh Miranda!”
“What do YOU want!?!?!?!”
“Oh well I saw what happened yesterday and I feel so bad. I was wondering if you wanted a pop from the machine?” she said, throwing on a fake smile.
They walked over and journey put in a quarter and told her to pick a pop, she chose grape. As soon as she opened it, it blew up in her face.
“Oh dear! You know what grape soda does to blonde hair right? What a shame, what a shame,” Journey said, her voice laced with sarcasm.
Miranda screamed in anger and stomped off. Sam ran up laughing.
“Well that’s bound to put her off grape pop for a while!!!!”
“So, maybe we could use some of these powers on my little brother tonight, since your staying over.”
“That’ll be fun.”
“Of course, payback always is!!!

 Chap. 3

“So, have you given any thought to the coupling I mentioned earlier?” Sam asked Journey slyly as they were playing a game of monopoly.
“Sam, I don’t know. I mean I like him and all but I think maybe it would be kind of… awkward. We’ve known each other for so long, ya’ know? And besides, Ravyn probably doesn’t even like me.”
“I don’t know why he wouldn’t.”
“I do. I’m not exactly the kind of girl that a guy necessarily likes.”
“Oh what ev…” Sam tried to say but was cut off by a person suddenly appearing on the desk to her right. The girl was tall and lean, with dark blonde hair that fell to her waist.
“Don’t you know how rude it is to ignore your guests?” she said as she leaped off the desk and landed in a crouch before Journey.
“Um, excuse me, who are you and how did you get here?” Journey asked scooting backwards. The stranger was getting a little to close for comfort. She was staring Journey right in the face, as if evaluating her.
The girl backed off. “I’m LeAnna. I’ve come to retrieve you. Magic. Some thing wrong with that?” she asked putting her hands on her hips.
“Well yes. I’d kind of like to know WHERE you are planning to take us and WHY. Is this some kind of joke?”
“Psh, you can only be so wishful. Let’s go, I don’t have time for this!” she said rudely grabbing both girls by the arm.
And suddenly Journey felt like her whole body was turning inside out. It was the worst feeling ever, like she was being squeezed through a REALLY small tube and having her entrails ripped out. Brilliant. Luckily it was over within seconds but it sure felt like hours.
“The first time’s always the worst. Glad to be the one to subject you to it,” LeAnna said laughing. Journey was about to punch her when she started to walk off.
When they cleared the trees Journey was face to face with the hugest, most beautiful building she had ever seen. The building was on a flat atop a big hill and it was at least 20 stories high and took up about 12 acres. It was in the traditional Japanese style with black and brown walls. The roof was a dark red and had smoke curling out of the many chimneys. Beautiful windows were scattered all over the walls. The windows were tall and beautifully shaped.
The building was surrounded by a lush, green lawn with an abundance of cherry blossom trees that were starting to lose their petals. Box shrubs lined the outside of the property and about a foot beyond them was a beautiful sparkling river that went around the entire property and had small water falls created by the piled rocks and bamboo stalks the were everywhere in it.
Journey and Sam stood in awe of the amazing sight. It was truly the most beautiful thing they had ever seen.
“Pull your jaws up and let’s go.” LeAnna said snapping them out of their trance.
So they hitched up their jaws and entered the unknown.

 Chap. 4

As soon as they entered the building they saw a bunch of people scuttling around. One of them dropped her task and made a beeline to LeeAnna.
“LeeAnna!” the woman exclaimed, “Her Majesty said you would be coming!” she started to walk towards a room at the far end. They followed exchanging confused glances. Seated in the a golden throne was an elegantly dressed woman, whom, they assumed, was the Queen.
She must have only been about fifty but she looked troubled and worn. They bowed and stood at attention for she opened her mouth to speak.
“Welcome, girls, we have much to discuss. You understand you have powers, correct?” she asked and they nodded, “Good, good. I know this is hard to comprehend, but it is prophesied that you will become heroes or martyrs to this land. A great evil residing in this land has finally been released, named Karion, and is plotting to rule and destroy us all. You will either defeat him and save us… or die trying.”
“WHAT!” Sam screamed running from the room.
Journey chased after her, catching her in the yard.
“Sam wait, please!”
“NO! I’m not going to just THROW my life away like that!”
“Sam, please. I know it’s hard to think about, but imagine all the lives we would save! I don’t know about you but I can’t just let all of them die. Do it for them. Do it for me, I don’t want to be alone in this.”
“Fine, for the people,” she grumbled, wiping away tears.

*********************************************
As soon as they returned the Queen resumed talking.
“I knew you would come back, you’re such great girls. Since your transformation is not yet complete I will get you a room.”
“Wait, transformation?” Sam asked stunned.
“Yes, you will gain full control of your powers as well as grow wings, claws, and the like.”
“Oh… great…”
“Ravyn will show you your room.”
“Wait! Ravyn?!?!” Journey sputtered.
Ravyn walked out of the shadows and led them from the room.
“Ravyn! Stop grinning like an idiot! I didn’t know you were here!”
“I have been for a long time.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
He simply shrugged.
“Why you…!”
“Here it is, home sweet home.”
“It looks like someone already lives here.”
“Someone does, you have to share with me.”

 Chap 5

That night Journey lay on Ravyn’s couch more or less thinking out loud.
“This is too weird…” she mumbled to herself, “Just all too weird…” her thoughts were interrupted by an insane stinging in her back. It felt like she had been run through with a sword.
Ravyn heard her yell and ran to help. As soon as he got there Sam started screaming too. Their transformation was in its final stage.
Both girls fell to the ground clutching at their bodies in agony. Lumps were forming near each shoulder blade. Their nails were getting longer and stronger. Their muscles were also growing. Journey’s eyes were starting to have a bright violet in her green irises. That wasn’t normal, at all.
Sam’s finished first. She had grown two small angelic wings where the lumps had been. Her ears were now long and pointy.
Journey finally finished hers ten minutes later. She, like Sam, now had long, pointy ears, and wings, although hers were large and similar to those of a bat. The main difference was that Journey’s eyes. She was now part Violet.
**********************

The girls had mostly come to terms with their changes, but Journey still couldn’t understand that she was now part Violet.
“So. I can now call souls into my head, to inhabit my body,” it was more of a statement than a question.
“Yes, I’ve explained that!” Ravyn said, exasperated.
“Hey, no need to yell, this is a big change for her… not to mention a bit creepy…” Sam said.
“And plus, you even said this has never happened before!!” Journey sighed.
“I’m sorry,” he said quietly.
“I’m tired.” Journey said, elegantly pushing herself up and walking into the living room to sleep on the couch.”
