Harsh is the light
that beats upon our bared skin
and dusts our freckled cheeks with pink.
But the heat is not a problem
for those of us who can think of nothing
but the sweet cold of melted ice
as it washes over our heated bodies,
ensnaring us in a world where we are weightless.
We pull with our arms and push with our legs,
gliding deeper into the clear abyss where the hot rays
can no longer touch our pale limbs.
We wish to live in this enchanted place,
but we have no flippers or fins or gills
in which to help us adapt they way we want to.
five seconds.
Then ten seconds more.
Twenty seconds under and our lungs scream in protest,
begging for the one thing this blue-green region cannot provide.
We breech, desperate to inhale and smiling in triumph
at having explored the depths beneath the surface for so long.
We laugh together and enjoy the light upon our faces.
Soon the coldness of shadows begins to spread
across our world above and we head for home,
all the while dreaming of our next adventure in the world below.

- Beautifully written; I love the free form of the poem but I also like how it flows so well. It totally gives me a feeling of nostalgia and makes me think of the days when I was kid and I would go to the lake or the ocean and it seemed like a magical world. I always wanted to be a mermaid! Hahaha. But again, well done. This is so much different then the usual poetry I see on here and I like that.
