• On the side of the road
    By thespurgin

Once I stopped on the side of the road
and looked across the land before.
An arid swathe of dust-filled void,
a piece of nothing size untold.

On the horizon earth and sky merge to one,
but my gaze turns instead to the road beside me,
where lies the ghost of a common dog...
a pet now to run to it's master no more.

His limbs twisted to angles obscene,
and his once blazing eyes now gaze haunt-ing-ly.
Those empty, dead eyes penetrate my soul,
and break my fragile heart in two.

A silent tear falls from my face,
a memorial to this life now gone...
that I never knew, and didn't take,
but that lack of knowing just seems...wrong.

As I drive away from that lonely place, I find myself conflicted,
and looking back to that ghost, I am left with the question... why?
