• I looked to the night sky;
    Looked at the stars
    And in the billion shining lights,
    Found you there,
    Smiling.

    To pluck you from the sky
    And be a falling star:
    That is what I wanted
    I wanted to share your laughter,
    And be close to you.
    I returned that smile.

    We became friends,
    And you were shining brightly;
    Untouchable.
    That was okay, though.
    I was close to you.
    The earth I stood on seemed
    So much closer to the endless night.
    Still I smiled.

    You became a shooting star,
    Reaching for other sparks in the sky.
    For a while, you found another spark
    And your light grew brighter.
    You went on smiling.
    My smile faltered.

    Eventually she faded away;
    Like dying embers in the night.
    You moved on.
    I felt hope again;
    A silent, quiet hope.
    But I whispered nothing in to the darkness.
    My smile was sad.

    Time passed.
    For a while, neither of us saw the other.
    You were still in the sky.
    I was still on earth.
    Daylight came and went.
    Finally we met again.

    I was happy to see you:
    So very, very happy.
    You were as wonderful as I remembered.
    My heart was full,
    My smile, pure.

    Then you told me something:
    Something wonderful;
    Something terrible.
    You said you swore to never fall from the sky,
    Never to fall for a mortal like me.

    And yet you were.

    You were a falling star
    But the mortal…
    It wasn’t me.

    Your smile was beautiful.
    Mine was false.

    You said you would risk everything for her.
    That she was the one.
    I felt strange.
    My heart hurt.

    The night sky never felt as vast and as dark as it did now.

    I closed my eyes to the heavens
    And turned my back.
    There is no quiet hope in my heart.
    I cannot look.

    I cannot smile.
