I am exactly what I look like,
but I'd prefer it if you would
convince me otherwise.
Playing pretend doesn't sound like a bad idea.
After all, I followed you like a child.
After some consideration, I decided
that I lost the devotion on the way,
along an overgrown road.
And I followed your trail in the dust,
trusting, faithful, like if I got to where you went,
I could be home.
There was a summer sky
that made me recall your words.
Well, I don't know what you said, exactly
because the sun was exhilarating,
so I was too dazzled
to do anything but crawl to you
for a simple smile.
Eventually I stopped,
and watched the path twist on,
towards a silver sky with jagged edges, already pointing
with accusatory glances
to the delicate lines painted
across the backs of my hands.
I fell back and contemplated the idea of a ceiling.
In the little retreat I built just for you,
so venomous was the air
that I breathed to the point of asphyxiation
and played hide-and-seek
with my self-assurance.
I guess I've never been very good at children's games.
