They Did Not Say Good-Bye
-
Your door is open
The world is now yours
A choice is to be made
The answer’s unclear
You stick out your foot
And dunk your toe into the sunlight bath
Your body trembles from the warmth
Breathe…
You walk by a window
There stands a ghost where you stand
The breath of life pushes you forward
You stagger and step over the soft hills on stone
As the smell burns your nose
The trash collectors buzz in your ears
Busy doing natures work
Breathe…
You hear laughter
See other children chasing puppies
You smell the sweet smell of fresh baked bread
You gaze upon the smiling faces
Of the busy people
But when they stop for a chat
It all fades away to grey
Breathe…
It all seems familiar
It all seems different
Mom told you to run
Dad told you to stay
Brother told you to hide your face
Sister told you to lock yourself away
You listened
Breathe…
You can remember the sounds
As you ran
The noise did not stop
As you stayed
The screams grew loud
As you hid your face
But soon you and the fear went away
Breathe…
You are the last
The last one to see
The last one to hear
The last one to scream
The rest have all left
They did not say good-bye
The war is over
Breathe…
