Pale, white kitchen tiles
Tall, tan kitchen stool
Two ponytails bouncing
Stomach rumbling for food
Dad walks in from work
Takes off his shoes and coat
Mom working late tonight
Fear replaces hunger
I watch this stranger called Dad
He hears my stomach
And enters the kitchen
Clatter of two bowls
Rustle of cornflakes in the box
Cereal quickly hits the bowl
Milk poured into the bowl
More clatter as the bowl is passed
Another hand gets the spoon
A small plink as it hits the milk
The bowl hides a dark, rough hand
A hand connected to an arm
An arm connected to a body
On top of the body is a head
With a face I now trust
