Weary travellers regard with fright
the thought of entering these woods at night.
But what they'd see! if they looked around
in a world that wakes as the sun goes down.
Cold moonlight bathes the ancient oaks,
poison ivy like a cruel hand chokes
the old bent boughs of the hemlock tree.
Wild eyes open, the stars to see.
A lone wolf howls on a high plateau,
while bats take flight from the caves below.
The wind picks up and increases speed,
awakes the woods with its stormy creed.
Deer dance gracefully on the ground
to the eerie beat of the crickets' sound.
Rabbits, fieldmice, and foxes hear
the celebration and gather near.
Moths awaken and beat their wings.
In the distance a screech owl sings.
Bears and wildcats begin to dance
in a forest caught in the midnight trance.
Weary travellers regard with fright
the thought of entering these woods at night.
But what they'd see! if they looked around
in a world that wakes as the sun goes down.
