In retrospect she would have preferred for it to have rained today, rather than that day. It would fit the mood much better for what she was about to do, in her mind she remembered it like a movie. Music and all...
A cool early spring rainfall a shared newspaper their only cover as they ran for the safety of a cafe. They burst through the door together laughing, and dripping wet. A soft romantic theme played in the background. He'd push a lock of hair away from her face, and look deep into her eyes, before taking her hand and walking towards a table in the back corner.
He'd ordered man coffee, and she'd gotten a cappuccino, and they'd share an over priced microwaved muffin. Then they'd sat and talked, and laugh and kiss lightly...(they were in public of course. This was a PG movie afterall ) Then as the shop was closing and the last customers were picking up their coats to leave, tossing goodbyes at the tired cafe workers, and dropping change in the tip jars.
He lean forward and said, "Thank you, for loving me."
And she replied, "It's my pleasure." The movie ended there that night. Perfect , and beautiful.
Was that only a month ago? She brushed the back of her hand across her face, she knew she'd just smudged her makeup but any heroine in her position would be the same.
The girl was pretty at least. Long brown hair, near doll like skin, sparkling eyes, they say together holding hands across the table. He gave her his 'look-I'm-charming' smile that she'd fallen for like a fool, and melted and swam in whenever it was directed at her. This girl did the same.
When the girl tilted her head back and laughed, it echoed pleasantly like a single pluck to a crystal tumbler. That was her cue. Standing up straight, and not bothering to try to wipe away her tears any longer she stormed over to the table and slammed her glass down in the center of it. Both of them jumped slightly and looked at her with surprise.
"Well?" she asked in her coldest voice.
"W-well what?" he looked from the girl to her, then back again.
"You know damn well what! How long?"
"Huh?" he still hadn't recovered apparently.
"How long have you been seeing her? How long before you were going to tell me it's over?!" her voice was rising, with her temper and her hurt. Their dumb surprised looks didn't help matters any, it only made her angrier, and that's what she'd blame it on later when she picked up his cup of coffee and dumped it on his head. "I hope you two are happy together. Charles, your things will be on the porch waiting for you." She said over her shoulder as she strode for the door. Slamming it hard enough to leave a crack in the glass.
The man and woman looked at one another in confusion, before he finally spoke, "Who the **** was that?"
At a table in the far corner of the cafe, a young black haired woman held out her hand to her companion for the 50.00 she just won.
The boy grumbled but pulled two twenties and a ten from the pocket of his jeans. "That was insane..."
The girl took the money and shoved it into her purse, "Letty takes her acting seriously. Which reminds me it looked like she was still in character when she left. I'd better go make sure isn't trying to slit her wrists or something. Nice doing business with ya sucka." She punched him on the arm as she stood up to leave.
The boy snorted, that'd teach him to make a bet with anybody from drama department. He looked back over to where Charles Landry was alternately wiping coffee out of his lap, and well..
"Kat I swear to God I never saw that chick before in my life!"
Watching the bane of his existence lose the girl of his dreams...well you couldn't really put a price on that could you?
He sat back in his chair to watch the unscripted drama unfold...and his scone was good too. This was a great day.
